Drugs Found in Car Parts, Again

More than $820,000 in opium was discovered hidden inside a shipment of spare car parts that arrived last month at Pearson International Airport on a flight from Iran.
Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officials announced details of the Jan. 9 seizure today.
More than 13 kilograms of opium was found concealed within shock absorbers, CBSA officials say. The drugs were turned over to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
"Regardless of the method of concealment, by using detection equipment, training and experience, border services officers are able to locate narcotics and other contraband even when the most unusual and sophisticated concealment methods are used," said Goran Vragovic, CBSA regional director general of the GTA Region.
In 2011, customs officers at GTA airports, and postal and cargo processing facilities seized 73 kilograms of opium worth more than $4.3 million.
Last week, authorities revealed details of another seizure at Pearson in which drugs were also hidden inside a shipment of car parts.
A five-kilogram stash of heroin, worth $2 million and mixed in with engine parts, arrived on a Jan. 26 flight from Pakistan.
