Minister Lebel Meets With U.S. Counterparts to Discuss Transportation Initiatives
Transport Canada Dec 13, 2011
Today, the Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities, met with the United States (U.S.) Secretary of Transportation, Mr. Ray LaHood, and the U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security, Ms. Janet Napolitano, in Washington, D.C., to discuss transportation initiatives and security measures that support job creation and economic growth in both countries.
Minister Lebel's visit follows the joint announcement on December 7 by Prime Minister Harper and President Obama of the action plans in support of the Beyond the Border Working Group and the Regulatory Cooperation Council.
"The Government of Canada works in close partnership with our U.S. neighbours to build a transportation system that benefits both countries travellers, consumers and business," said Minister Lebel. "My meetings today with Mr. LaHood and Ms. Napolitano underscore our joint commitment to security and efficiency to keep trade moving."
Canada's goal is to ensure that its transportation system is among the safest and most efficient in the world. The Canada-U.S. trading relationship, and the integrated transportation network that supports it, is vital to the economic well-being of both countries. This first joint meeting provided an opportunity to address shared challenges and develop strategies to support efficient international trade and transportation.
